Scovia is seven years old and is entering the third grade at Seeds Academy. She's among the top students in her grade and dreams of being doctor someday. She loves to skip rope, yet has no shoes and a very tattered school uniform. When not in school, Scovia has to spend her time in the slums trying to be safe. She lives with her mother who is not employed and whose only means of providing for little Scovia is to pick through the trash. She is well fed while she is at school, but rarely gets food at night. Scovia's mother drinks constantly and often chases Scovia out of their slum home and into the street at night, where she ends up sleeping in a trash house behind their home. All Scovia wants is to live in the orphanage and continue to attend Seeds Academy.
